During the 18th through the early 20th centuries, France extended its Colonial empire over a large portion of the world. With major colonial holdings in Africa, India, Indochina and the South Pacific, French influence spread rapidly throughout the world. As France’s far- reaching holdings began to shrink an undeniable influence remained behind in the medals of the former colonies and other outposts. In many cases these were finely made pieces, which emanated from the major houses of Paris. This influence continues to this very day. We have captured here many examples of this influence as documented throughout the once mighty empire. To view each individual country, just click on the left hand menu.
